They demand the resignation of the Minister of Transport and Communications of Peru
(CNN Spanish) — The Congress of Peru, with a vote of 94 in favor, 14 against and 8 abstentions, approved this Thursday a motion of censure against the Minister of Transport and Communications, Geiner Alvarado López, on the grounds of his alleged “lack of suitability” for the exercise of the position.
In Peru, the constitutional framework for legislative censure establishes that the minister must resign, and the president must accept the resignation within 72 hours.
The approved motion refers to the alleged link of the minister to “alleged illicit acts” related to “fraudulent tenders” for “huge sums” of money when he held the position of Minister of Housing, Construction and Sanitation since July 2021, before passing to the Ministry of Transport and Communications in the current government.
Although the motion cites the lack of will to “clarify” the cases, Alvarado assured that he gave the Legislature detailed and probative information that, according to what he affirms, he would never have benefited private interests in his capacity as minister and that he has always complied with all the procedures established by law.
At the beginning of last week, on his Twitter account, he “categorically” rejected belonging to a criminal organization and stated that “no witness refers to me about illegal acts because I have not committed them.”
In that same series, Alvarado provided details on the management of some projects related to water and sanitation, for which he has been questioned with arguments such as that he would have awarded them in record time.
Until now, the minister pointed out that some of these projects preceded his management or began to be processed in previous governments, such as those of former presidents Martín Vizcarra and Francisco Sagasti.
