(CNN Spanish) — Official talks begin in Chile in Congress to advance towards a possible new constituent process, according to the president of the Senate, Álvaro Elizalde.
The announcement comes after a meeting on Tuesday between President Gabriel Boric and leaders of ruling and opposition parties at the Palacio de La Moneda, where the results of Sunday’s plebiscite and the resounding victory of the “rejection” option were discussed. , which won with 61.87% of the votes.
“President Gabriel Boric raised the importance of collectively assuming this challenge and raised the need for us to act with the responsibility that democratic dialogue requires to propose to the country a constituent itinerary that lives up to what Chileans demand,” said Elizalde. .
For his part, the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Raúl Soto, said that “this is a tremendously important milestone for Chile. “It opens a door of hope for us regarding the real possibility of reaching a political and social consensus to enable a new constitutional process, that we do it in a good way, correcting the mistakes of the past,” he added.
The meeting will take place in the National Congress in Valparaíso and the presidents of political parties, the heads of the Senate and also the Chamber of Deputies were summoned.
“We have all assumed political responsibility for the historical moment that we have to lead, to give certainty to the country, to carry out a good process and not to mess around with this second opportunity, which will probably be the last,” concluded Soto.
