The so-called “cobro” de piso” —a form of extortion— grew 12.3% in 2021 compared to 2020, according to a security report from the Government of Mexico. Analysts affirm that this is one of the most complex crimes to face in the country, since less than 3% of those affected filed a complaint with the authorities.
