(CNN Spanish) — The National Service for Comprehensive Care for Adults Deprived of Liberty and Adolescent Offenders (SNAI) reported this Wednesday afternoon that new incidents of violence were recorded at the Guayas Penitentiary and that protocols were activated to contain clashes between inmates of pavilions 2, 3 and 9 of this prison center.
A preliminary report from the SNAI indicates that so far six inmates and five police officers have been injured. So far there is no report of deaths and damage to the prison infrastructure was recorded, according to the institution.
The Ecuadorian National Police indicated that its personnel are intervening with special teams to restore control and order in the Penitenciaría del Litoral, located on the outskirts of the port city of Guayaquil and one of the most violent prisons in Ecuador.
These new incidents were reported by the SNAI a few hours after a day of clashes between organized crime gangs in the Latacunga prison, which left 16 dead and more than 40 injured.
According to government authorities, these violent incidents are due to the struggle between criminal gangs linked to drug trafficking that seek to increase their power and control inside Ecuadorian prisons.
Since December 2020, more than 400 inmates have been murdered in different Ecuadorian prisons, according to figures from the SNAI and the Ministry of the Interior.
