(CNN Spanish) — The head of the Special Prosecutor’s Office Against Impunity in Guatemala, Rafael Curruchiche, reported Monday that he has issued an arrest warrant against the former head of that body, Juan Francisco Sandoval.
Curruchiche said that the measure is due to an investigation against Sandoval for —allegedly— having committed crimes of denial of justice and influence peddling when he was in office.
Given this, Juan Francisco Sandoval told CNN that this “confirms the pattern of criminalization to stigmatize” and said that this is about the “state apparatus” directed against him.
According to the MP statement, the former prosecutor would have shared information from an investigation and would have offered to intervene in cases of which he was aware.
Juan Francisco Sandoval was removed from his position in July 2021 by Attorney General Consuelo Porras. According to the authorities, Porras’ decision was due to alleged “insults” by the now former official against the attorney general herself.
The former Feci prosecutor has classified these accusations as a persecution of justice operators in Guatemala.
